If you want to make a good impression on your guests when hosting, it’s important to put in some effort. Try this advice:
1. Display natural lighting
If you’re lucky, your home has large windows that allow the sun to shine through. This is great for daytime gatherings. Natural sunlight will create a comfortable environment for your guests. When the sun sets, use dim warm yellow lighting and use it sparsely. There’s nothing that kills a mood faster than fluorescent lighting. It’s hard to relax when you feel like you’re at the doctor’s office.
2. Provide an assortment of food/beverages
You don’t need to cater to every dietary restriction, however, it’s a nice gesture to give your guests some options. At least have a few drinks for your guests to choose from. Be sure to include non-alcoholic options.
3. Provide appropriate seating
Ensure that everyone has a comfortable place to sit. Your guests should be close enough that they can communicate without raising their voice, yet have enough space to leave their arms at their sides.
4. Utilize your kitchen
The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home. At some point during your event, you and your guests will likely end up in the kitchen. Hopefully your kitchen is clean and spacious. It’s perfectly acceptable for your guests to stand in the kitchen, however, some bar stools can add extra comfort.
5. Utilize your outdoor area
If you have a porch or a backyard, place some outdoor furniture there so you and your guests can enjoy a beautiful evening outdoors, while hardly leaving the home. Add some solar powered lanterns for lighting and decoration.
6. Provide a comfortable room for overnight guests
If there’s a chance that you’re guests will be staying the night, you should be prepared ahead of time. Keep the guest bedroom clean. Provide bath towels and basic toiletries. There should be clean sheets and plenty of pillows.
